How to Make Lipstick at Home?

cosmetics

Lipstick has a rich and long history, I’d say, which goes back to the queen of the ancient Sumerian Period.

Some wear lipstick to boost their self-confidence. Some to complete their look. Others to draw attention to their lips and appear more attractive to the opposite sex.

Whatever your reason for making it your “go-to” makeup item, have you never felt the need to make your own homemade lipstick?

Method 1:

Method one of making lipstick

Step 1 – Gather Your Supplies:

Before we come to the ingredients, decide on the container you will use. Lip balm tubes or small pots with lids are excellent choices (and these should be made of metal, glass or plastic). And, if you are reusing any containers, make sure to soak them in hot water and clean them thoroughly with a cotton ball soaked in white vinegar or alcohol.

Other materials you’ll need:

  • small heatproof bowl or glass measuring cup
  • saucepan or double boiler
  • glass dropper or pipette
  • spoon or spatula

Now, what you’ll need for the recipe:

  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) beeswax or beeswax beads, which can be easily found at any local craft supply store.
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) shea butter, mango butter, almond butter or avocado butter. This ingredient amplifies the smooth-rolling side of the lipstick.
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) oil, like almond oil, extra virgin olive oil, jojoba oil or oil of soya.

Once you’ve got your basic supplies, it’s time to select a color for your lipstick. Different substances can be sued to create a range of red, pink, brown and orange shades and here are some options:

  • Create the typical bold, dauntless bright red lipstick with beetroot powder or crushed beet chips.
  • If you are more for the brownish hue, take some cinnamon from your kitchen.
  • Mix haldi(mostly known as turmeric) with some other substances to give birth to a more coppery tone.
  • For a powerful and deeper brown shade, use cocoa powder.

Step 2 – Melt the Ingredients Together and Mix In the Color:

  • Place all the base ingredients in the top of your double boiler or heatproof bowl.
  • Heat around 2 inches (5 cm) of water in a large saucepan over medium-high heat and then add the ingredients in a small pan and place it inside the first one.
  • Let the water simmer until the mixture is melted.
  • Here’s the fun part: when you add in the ingredient for the color of the lipstick.

Step 3 – Pour the Mixture Into Containers:

With a dropper, transfer the liquid into the tube or any other container. Do not forget to leave a little bit of space at the top as once the mixture will cool down, it will expand. And, please do not close the lids until it’s hardened (better is to wait for at least 30 minutes).

Method 2:

Making lipstick with eye shadow

Step 1 – Get Your Eyeshadow:

You can either use that old eyeshadow that’s been lying in your drawer for ages or buy a cheap one. Be careful not to use the gel form but the loose or compacted powder.

It’s pretty difficult to find green, blue, black in lipstick shades and that’s why we are using eyeshadows as they can work as color pigments. And, if you like sparkling lipstick, add a little shimmering eyeshadow to the color you’ve chosen.

Scoop a big chunk of the eyeshadow in a bowl and mash it up with the back of a spoon.

However, do not let this slip from your mind: some eyeshadows are not safe at all to be used on your lips. How to figure this out? Check the list of ingredients. If it consists of ultramarines, ferric ferrocyanide, and chromium oxides, forget about making your own lipstick.

Step 2 – Mix the Eyeshadow Powder With Petroleum Jelly:

In a microwave-safe bowl, add about one tablespoon (15 ml) of petroleum jelly and one teaspoon (5 ml) of eyeshadow powder. Heat the mixture until it melts.

Step 3 – Pour the Mixture Into Containers:

Once again, you can use an old lipstick tube, a cosmetics pot or any other container.
