Fashion Crafts: Unique DIY Projects to Try

Till today, I have not wasted a single piece of clothing. How is it possible? Well, I’ve learned how to upcycle old garments. So, here are some of the very best DIY fashion project ideas you could try at home!

Fabric Stamping on Old Clothing

Fabric Stamping on Old ClothingMaterials you’ll need for this craft:

  • An old skirt
  • A brayer
  • Fabric block stamp
  • Fabric paint

Instructions on how to make the Fabric Stamping on old Clothing:

Step 1:

You can start by placing some fabric paint –a paint of your choice – on a paper plate. Then, submerge the stamp in the paint and dab it to remove any extra paint.

Little Note: These stamps have been specifically designed for imprinting on fabric. This is why you can dip the stamp in the paint rather than just roll it in the paint.

Step 2:

Now, it’s time to stamp the skirt. Once it’s done, set it aside and let it dry for around 1-3 hours. Or, you can also choose to follow the specific instructions as set on the fabric paint label.

Additional Tips:

  • Usually, this stamping method is recommended for old clothing, but you can also try it on new garments. However, make sure you are prewashing them before stamping. And, remember not to use any fabric softener.
  • It is critical to read the label on the fabric paint bottle and make sure it’s appropriate for the fabric you’ve chosen. Personally, I’ve always used cotton or cotton blends and I’ve always ended up with good results. However, I don’t really recommend stuff like lycra, tulle and rayon.
  • If it’s your first time, I always advise practicing fabric stamping on paper first before working on the fabric directly.
  • Again, if it’s your first time, don’t stress out if it’s not exactly what you were expecting for. With practice, I’m sure it’ll be better next time.

Homemade Cross Stitch Sweater

Homemade Cross Stitch SweaterMaterials you’ll need for this craft:

  • A yarn needle
  • A pair of scissors
  • Yarn
  • An old sweater
  • Cross stitch pattern

Instructions on how to make the Homemade Cross Stitch Sweater:

Step 1:

Note: I’d like to start by saying if you don’t have yarn, you can substitute by using a small needle and embroidery thread to cross stitch on your sweater. It’ll be great if you could find one with a grid. Moreover, you can also use a fabric marker to create your design.

So, you should start from the inside of the sweater and then follow a pattern. Honestly, I didn’t have any specific patterns, I just started by stitching an X. You can try the same method. So, keep stitching Xs and changing colors as directed by your design. Stretching out the sweater and stitches on a regular basis helped it lay flat.

DIY Graphic Tee with Watercolor Letters

DIY Graphic Tee with Watercolor LettersMaterials you’ll need for this craft:

  • An iron
  • Some paintbrushes
  • An old cotton or cotton-blend t-shirt
  • Soft flock iron-on letters
  • Tie-dye (You could opt for fabric paint, but a tie-dye is a washable option that closely resembles watercolor.)

Instructions on how to make the DIY Graphic Tee with Watercolor Letters:

Step 1:

Remove any plastic from the top of your letters and cut them out. Change up your tie-dye. Pour tie-dye into cups into which you may dip your brush.

Step 2:

Dab your brush softly into the tie-dye and dab it into the letters, allowing the colors to spill over each other. Repeat with each color until you have reached the desired quantity of color.

Step 3:

Set the letters aside and let them to dry totally. Iron-on according to package directions. For mine, I was told to press the letters for around 20 seconds on medium heat with no steam. And, that’s it, you are done! You can now wear the tee and bluff about your skills with your friends.
